Therapy for adults and teens in-person in Santa Cruz, CA and online across California.
The people who find their way to my practice tend to be perceptive, compassionate people who are good at taking care of others. Many seek therapy in times of transition such as when a relationship ends, or when they step out of a familiar role, and they find themselves confronting the question “Who am I, and what do I really want?” Others finally seek therapy when they are feeling so anxious or depressed that life feels unmanageable.
You want to feel solid in yourself, yet find that you lose yourself in relationships.
You have a hard time knowing what you actually feel, need or want, even though you’re excellent at perceiving what others are feeling, needing, or wanting.
You feel responsible for others, believing that if someone is unhappy or has a problem, you need to make it better.
You feel both “too much” and “not enough” for other people.
You may have a difficult relationship with food.
You may only communicate what you need or want when you reach a point of nearly unbearable disappointment and frustration.
You may question whether you have a right to therapy when other people "have it worse."
You struggle to say no or set boundaries and often feel exhausted.
You may experience chronic tension in your jaw, neck, shoulders, or back, or have digestive issues or chronic inflammation.
You may at times feel numbness, a sense of being slightly removed from yourself and the world around you, and at other times feel an overwhelming amount of emotion, alternating between feeling “too much” and “too little.”
You may dislike parts of yourself and hope that therapy will “get rid of” or "fix" these aspects of you. But what if the problem is not who you are, but what you have come to believe about yourself?
When we believe some aspect of ourselves is shameful, we develop strategies to avoid the shame. The beliefs and strategies cause us suffering. But they’re not who we are.
